Regions and districts in Kyrgyzstan will be abolished and replaced with 20 administrative units. This was announced on April 16 by President Sadyr Japarov during a meeting with residents of the Nookat district.
According to the Kyrgyz leader, the country currently has 44 districts and 33 cities.
“Regions and districts will be abolished, and 20 administrative units will remain — in simple terms, there will effectively be 20 regions. However, this will take time, approximately three to four years,” the president said, outlining the plan.
He noted that, as a first step, a pilot project will be launched by establishing a single administrative unit to test the new governance system. It will be monitored over a period of two to three years, with the key criterion being its ability to operate without reliance on state subsidies. If the project is deemed successful, regions and districts will be fully abolished and the country will be reorganized into administrative units.
Sadyr Japarov also emphasized that the first phase of the administrative-territorial reform has been successfully completed.
It is worth noting that Sadyr Japarov had earlier announced a decision prohibiting the naming of villages and rural administrative units after individuals.
