In the United States, New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, expressed gratitude to Uzbek nurses during his victory speech today, November 5.

“New York, tonight you have given a mandate for change. A mandate for a new kind of politics. A mandate for the city we can reach. And a mandate for a government that delivers exactly these results,” Mamdani said.

He specifically thanked Yemeni bodega (small shop) owners, Senegalese taxi drivers, Uzbek nurses, Trinidadian kitchen assistants, and Ethiopian nannies.

“Thank you to the new generation of New Yorkers who refused to start with the past and instead embraced the promise of a better future. You have shown that politics, when spoken sincerely and without condescension, can begin a new era of leadership,” he added.

For reference, the New York City election took place yesterday, November 4. Mamdani defeated Republican Curtis Sliwa and former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent candidate.
