Direct flights between Uzbekistan and Iraq could be introduced, Iraq’s Minister of Trade, Atir Dawood al-Ghurairi, told QALAMPIR.UZ during the “Baghdad International Fair.”
“Today, the visa process has been simplified—it now takes only six hours from application to completion. The Iraqi Ministry of Trade and other agencies are ready to welcome every entrepreneur, investor, or tourist from Uzbekistan with open arms and provide all necessary assistance,” al-Ghurairi said.
He added that entering the Iraqi market should not pose serious problems regarding visas, customs, or logistics. The Trade Committee will maintain continuous oversight to simplify these procedures and resolve any potential obstacles. The establishment of this committee was proposed by the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan. There will be no restrictions or discrimination against Uzbek products; competition will be based solely on quality and price.
“During our meeting with the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, we also discussed launching direct air services. Initially, flights will be focused on trade routes. I am confident that in the future, Uzbekistan will become one of the most attractive destinations for Iraqi tourists,” al-Ghurairi said.
According to the minister, Uzbek products are well-positioned to compete in Iraq in terms of both quality and price. The Iraqi market is large and continues to have strong import demand, currently exceeding $85 billion annually.
“Some imported products cannot compete with Uzbek goods. The problem has been that there were no direct trade or logistics routes between Iraq and Uzbekistan. However, through our current meetings, we expect to resolve this issue and open a new phase in trade relations,” he added.
Al-Ghurairi also noted that Iraqi investment laws support foreign investors and offer broad incentives.
“I have personally observed Uzbekistan’s industrial sectors, and I can confidently say that many of these industries could achieve great success in Iraq, particularly in Baghdad and other major regions. Several manufacturing sectors in Uzbekistan are capable of entering the Iraqi market and creating a highly competitive environment. Therefore, clearly defining industrial zones and investment areas is important to organize cooperation in a systematic way,” he said.
For context, the “Baghdad International Fair” is being held in the Iraqi capital from February 1–7. Around 700 companies from more than 22 countries are participating, covering sectors including trade, construction, energy, special equipment, food, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. Uzbek products are being showcased under the national brand “Made in Uzbekistan,” with more than 200 entrepreneurs and industry leaders from Uzbekistan attending the event.
