During his brother’s presidency, he was considered one of the most influential figures in Jalal-Abad and headed the company “Sali-Ata,” named after their father. Following the change of power in 2010, several criminal cases were initiated against him in Kyrgyzstan.
In August 2011, the Jalal-Abad City Court sentenced Akhmat Bakiyev to seven years in prison to be served in a high-security correctional colony. According to the court ruling, he was found guilty under multiple articles of the Criminal Code, including fraud, organizing or participating in illegal armed groups, hooliganism, and the illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, or transportation of firearms, ammunition, explosives, and explosive devices.
On January 4, 2012, Akhmat Bakiyev was transferred from a correctional colony to Colony-Settlement No. 35 in Bishkek. According to the State Service for the Execution of Punishments, prisoners may be transferred to a colony-settlement after serving one-third of their sentence, provided they comply with institutional rules.
In March 2012, the State Service for the Execution of Punishments reported that Akhmat Bakiyev had escaped from Colony-Settlement No. 35 on March 3. At the time, authorities stated that he had been admitted to Hospital No. 6 on January 24, where he remained until February 6, after which he was transferred to a private medical center in Bishkek for further treatment. During this period, staff from Colony-Settlement No. 35 reportedly checked on him daily, with records confirming these visits. However, during a routine check on March 3, he was found to be missing.
