Shavkat Mirziyoyev to visit Japan

President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev will pay an official visit to Japan on December 18–20 at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. This was reported by the Presidential Press Service.

According to the visit program, meetings and negotiations are planned in Tokyo with Emperor of Japan Naruhito, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the leadership of parliament, members of the government, representatives of political parties, and rectors of leading universities.

The agenda will focus on further expanding and strengthening the strategic partnership and multifaceted cooperation between Uzbekistan and Japan.

As part of the business program, meetings and events will be held with the participation of heads of major Japanese companies and financial institutions. Issues related to expanding trade and economic cooperation and promoting investment projects will be discussed in detail. A substantial package of bilateral documents is expected to be adopted.

The President of Uzbekistan will also take part in the first summit of heads of state within the “Central Asia – Japan” dialogue. The event will discuss prospects for cooperation in priority areas such as the green economy and sustainable development, connectivity and strengthening regional partnership, as well as human resource development.

Following the summit, the adoption of the Tokyo Declaration is planned.

The summit was initially scheduled to take place in Kazakhstan in August 2024 but was canceled due to emergency preparedness measures in Japan related to the risk of a mega-earthquake along the Pacific coast.

Through this summit, Japan aims to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with Central Asia. Negotiations on regional security, trade, and investment opportunities are expected. Japanese officials view the event as a means of balancing the influence of global powers in the region.

Earlier, it was reported that the Central Asia – Japan summit would be held in Tokyo on December 19–20. Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is also scheduled to pay an official visit to Japan on December 18–20.
