Today, October 21, people will witness one of the rarest cosmic events. The green comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) will pass at its closest distance to Earth, a phenomenon that may not recur for more than a thousand years, National Geographic reported.
According to astronomers, since entering the inner solar system, the Lemmon comet has been gradually brightening and has now become visible to the naked eye.
An expert named Stroud noted that the Lemmon comet is among the brightest comets to appear in Earth’s sky this year. The comet’s green color is explained by the breakdown of diatomic carbon (C₂) in its composition when exposed to sunlight.
After sunset, from approximately 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tashkent time, the comet can also be observed from Uzbekistan’s sky. However, visibility is not guaranteed. Experts recommend looking toward the western part of the sky during that time and avoiding areas with artificial lighting. Specialists emphasize that the comet poses no danger to Earth.
It is worth noting that on October 7 this year, the Moon approached its closest point to Earth, less than 360,000 kilometers away, an event known as a supermoon.
