On average, February is expected to be 2–3 degrees warmer than January, and 1–1.5 degrees warmer in mountainous areas. Uzhydromet reported this in its latest weather outlook.
However, winter weather is not consistent, and February conditions in Uzbekistan vary significantly from year to year.
During periods of spring-like warmth in February, nature begins to awaken, with early-blooming varieties of almonds, apricots, plums, and cherries starting to flower.
According to all years of meteorological observations in Uzbekistan, the absolute maximum temperatures recorded in February range from 24–29 degrees Celsius, reaching 30–32 degrees Celsius in some southern areas. In most parts of the country, these records were set in 2016 and 2021.
In this century, February 2004, 2016, and 2021 were the warmest on record, with average monthly temperatures exceeding climatic norms by 3–6 degrees. During the warmest periods of those years, air temperatures rose to 22–27 degrees Celsius, and up to 28–30 degrees Celsius in the south, which is more typical of mid-spring.
However, even in the warmest years, February does not lose its status as a winter month. Sharp warm spells are often followed by short-term returns of cold weather. For example, in February 2021, after abnormally warm conditions (8–13 degrees above normal), air temperatures dropped by 10–15 degrees in the final week of the month.
February 2014 was the coldest, with average monthly temperatures falling 4–8 degrees below normal. In most parts of the country, minimum air temperatures dropped to 17–22 degrees below zero, and to 25–30 degrees below zero in northern regions. These were the lowest February temperatures recorded across much of Uzbekistan in the 21st century.
At the same time, the cold spell in February 2014 was less severe than the absolute historical minimum temperature records. Historically, temperatures have fallen to 22–27 degrees below zero across much of the country, to 32 degrees below zero in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, and to 38–40 degrees below zero on the Ustyurt Plateau.
Only in Surkhandarya region does the absolute minimum temperature record date to this century. In February 2014, temperatures there dropped to 20–22 degrees below zero.
