Italian Prime Minister to visit Samarkand

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will visit Uzbekistan on May 28-29, the Italian government’s press service announced.

According to the statement, negotiations and meetings will take place in the city of Samarkand.

On May 30, Meloni will travel to Kazakhstan. On the same day, the first “Central Asia – Italy” summit, attended by regional leaders, will be held in Astana.

For reference, on July 8, 2023, during President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s official visit to Italy, talks between Mirziyoyev and Meloni were held at the Quirinal Palace in Rome. In November of the same year, Italian President Sergio Mattarella visited Uzbekistan. The Italian President, accompanied by his daughter Laura Mattarella, also traveled to Samarkand.

It is worth noting that Meloni’s visit to Uzbekistan was initially scheduled for April 25-26, while the first “Central Asia – Italy” summit was planned for April 27 in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. However, these events were postponed due to the death of Pope Francis.
