Prominent Uzbek journalist Karim Bahriyev passes away

Prominent journalist, writer, translator and former member of parliament Karim Bahriyev has died at the age of 64 on March 29, the Uzbekistan Journalists’ Union reported.

He had recently been hospitalized after suffering a stroke.

For reference, Karim Bahriyev was born in 1962 in the village of G‘o‘s, Urgut district of Samarkand region. He graduated from the Faculty of Russian Philology at Samarkand State University and the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University. He worked for the newspapers “Hurriyat,” “Uzbekiston Adabiyoti va San’ati,” and “Ma’rifat,” as well as the journals “Jahon Adabiyoti” and “Dugonalar.”

He is the author of poetry collections such as “Fragments of the Cup of Patience” and “Tomchidil,” as well as books including “Democracy and Human Rights,” “Rights, Duties and Responsibilities of a Journalist,” “Legal Foundations of Mass Media Activity,” “We Seek the Truth,” and “On Freedom of Speech.” He also authored the textbook “Media Law,” the guide “100 Questions and 100 Answers on Media Legislation,” and numerous analytical and critical articles. He was a member of the Writers’ Union of Uzbekistan.

Through his translations, novels, poems and ballads by German, Malay, Azerbaijani, Turkish, Greek, French, Arab, English, Spanish, American, Iranian, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Dutch, Danish and Icelandic authors were published in Uzbek.

He was awarded the “Independence” badge in 1992, 2006 and 2011.
