Singer Jahongir Otajonov was reportedly defrauded of 2.3 billion soum by an acquaintance he described as “like a brother.” QALAMPIR.UZ reviewed court documents related to the case.

According to the court proceedings, the two individuals first met while studying together at the Uzbekistan State Conservatory between 2003 and 2009. Despite their later friendly relationship, the accused, identified as X.H., allegedly took advantage of Otajonov’s trust to commit financial fraud.

Court records indicate that X.H. misappropriated funds intended for the purchase of Otajonov’s Lexus and BMW vehicles, as well as parts of his residence, and payments for various services at events. The fraudulent activity began in 2017. For instance, in November 2017, X.H. agreed to purchase Otajonov’s Lexus for $68,000, initially paying $34,000 and promising to pay the remainder over two years. Instead, X.H. registered the vehicle under another person’s name and used the remaining funds for personal expenses.

In July 2019, X.H. invited Otajonov to a wedding in Tashkent, accepting $1,000 for services but using the money for personal purposes. He also collected $5,000 for services at other weddings in Qashqadaryo and refused to hand the funds to the singer.

In 2021, X.H. purchased Otajonov’s BMW for $83,000, paying $15,000 upfront and agreeing to pay the rest over two years. However, he again registered the car under another name and failed to complete the payments. In March of the same year, X.H. learned that Otajonov intended to sell his Tashkent residence for $35,000. X.H. paid $30,000 and promised to pay the remaining $5,000 later but did not fulfill this commitment.

X.H. also attempted to acquire another of Otajonov’s properties, misappropriating a total of $32,000. During the trial, he expressed remorse and stated that he was willing to compensate for the financial damages if given the opportunity.

According to the verdict by the Yakkasaray District Court, X.H. was found guilty under Article 168, Part 4(a) of the Criminal Code (fraud) and sentenced to eight years in prison. He was also ordered to compensate Otajonov for the total financial loss of 2.337 billion soʻm. Two apartments registered under X.H.’s name in Tashkent were evaluated as assets acquired through fraud, and proceeds from their sale will be directed toward reimbursing the singer’s losses.
