Password is no longer 'Password': 40 foreign terms replaced in Uzbek

Forty foreign terms widely used in the Uzbek language have now been officially translated into Uzbek. According to the minutes of Meeting No. 62 of the Terminology Commission under the Cabinet of Ministers, dated July 30 of this year, the new terms—formed by the norms and rules of the Uzbek language—have been approved for official use.

This decision aligns with the Concept for the Development of the Uzbek Language and Improvement of Language Policy for 2020–2030, which was adopted by Presidential Decree on October 20, 2020. The decree outlines the task of systematically introducing scientifically grounded and nationally appropriate terms into official circulation.

To implement this goal, the Terminology Commission approved its 62nd report, officially replacing 40 commonly used foreign words with Uzbek-language alternatives.

The Institute of the Uzbek Language, Literature and Folklore of the Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with the Department for the Development of the State Language under the Cabinet of Ministers, played a central role in this effort. The list of replacements was reviewed by expert groups and discussed broadly on media platforms and social networks.

When determining Uzbek equivalents for these foreign terms, linguists from the Institute worked closely with professionals from relevant sectors to ensure practical and contextual accuracy.

It should be recalled that earlier, it was announced that graduates from schools where the language of instruction is not Uzbek will be required to pass an examination in the state language.
