Three ancient coins were seized in Samarkand from individuals attempting to take them out of the country, the State Customs Committee of Uzbekistan reported.

According to the statement, the incident occurred at Samarkand International Airport, where a passenger departing for a foreign country underwent a routine customs inspection. During the check of the passenger’s hand luggage, officers discovered three ancient coins that had not been declared during oral questioning.

Pre-investigation checks are currently underway in connection with the case.

Under current legislation, the export of cultural valuables created 50 years ago or earlier, including numismatic items, is strictly prohibited in Uzbekistan.

Earlier, authorities also foiled an attempt to smuggle gold bars out of the country concealed inside a baby’s diaper.
