Tashkent CHP plant abandons fuel oil to improve air quality

To improve air quality, the Tashkent Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant located in the Yakkasaroy district has stopped using fuel oil. This was announced on 20 November during a press tour organized for journalists and bloggers by Joint-Stock Company Thermal Power Stations.

According to the information presented, the press tour showcased the modernization work carried out at the Tashkent Combined Heat and Power Plant. Five boiler units and one gas turbine installation have been repaired. The plant has completely discontinued the use of fuel oil, and both electricity and heat are now generated exclusively through modern natural gas–based equipment.

In 2024, two new gas turbine units with a total capacity of 64 MW were commissioned at the plant. As a result, emissions of pollutants released into the environment have been reduced by 200 tonnes per year.

The new equipment will enable the annual production of an additional 515 million kWh of electricity and 630 Gcal of heat. To strengthen environmental monitoring, four automatic monitoring stations and one eco-post have been installed on the plant’s premises. All their readings are transmitted in real time to the Situation Center of the environmental authority for continuous analysis. In addition, mechanical connection filters in the gas pipelines have been fully replaced.

Since the plant is located in the center of Tashkent, active efforts are also being made to improve environmental conditions and enhance the city's appearance. In particular, a “green belt” has been created with the planting of 16,490 fruit and ornamental trees across 15.5 hectares.

It is worth noting that earlier reports noted an increase in fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) in Tashkent’s air in recent days. Later, Uzhydromet released the results of monitoring, stating that the situation was caused by several natural factors that intensified simultaneously.
