As previously reported, two students, including an Uzbek national born in 2007, Muhammadaziz Umurzoqov, were killed in a shooting that occurred on December 13 at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Uzbekistan Jonathan Henick has expressed his condolences to the victim’s family.

“News of the tragic death of Brown University student Muhammadaziz Umurzoqov on December 13 has deeply saddened me. We extend our sincere condolences to Umurzoqov’s family members, friends, and classmates, and deeply mourn the fact that his bright dreams were left unrealized,” Henick said.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said at a press conference on December 13 that a man in his early 20s had been detained in connection with the incident, though no further details were disclosed. Later the same day, local police stated at another briefing that the detained individual had been released and that the investigation was being pursued “in a different direction.”

On December 14, FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on social media platform X that the suspect had been detained at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, located approximately 30 minutes from the Brown University campus. According to him, FBI specialists used geolocation data to identify the suspect.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, the incident is the latest among nearly 400 mass shootings recorded in the United States so far this year. Following the shooting, all exams and classes at the university have been canceled for the remainder of the year.

A fundraising campaign has also been launched in memory of the deceased. The collected funds are expected to be used to cover legal expenses and funeral-related costs.
