Financial penalties introduced for environmental violations

Financial sanctions will be introduced in Uzbekistan for violations in the field of ecology, according to Law No. 1143 adopted on May 4.
The document introduces amendments and additions to several legislative acts. Under the changes, financial penalties will be applied for violations related to environmental protection, ecology, and the use of natural resources.
Legal entities that violate procedures for riverbed cleaning and bank reinforcement will face fines amounting to three times the environmental damage caused.
For water pollution and violations of discharge requirements for wastewater into water bodies, legal entities will be subject to financial penalties equal to ten times the compensation payable for environmental damage.
Legal entities that fail to take required measures to protect and preserve trees in areas under their ownership or control will face fines amounting to five times the environmental damage caused.
The law will enter into force three months after its official publication.
