Hot showers may lead to baldness – study

Taking excessively hot showers can cause temporary or progressive hair loss, according to British trichologist and hair transplant specialist Dr. Wajid Ali Anwar.

The expert explained that overly hot water dries out the scalp, damages its natural protective barrier, and weakens hair strands. Extremely hot showers can also inflame the scalp, strip away natural oils, and make hair rough and brittle. As a result, hair becomes dehydrated, breaks easily, and may begin to fall out. Patients often describe the condition as “sudden baldness.”

Dr. Anwar noted that those who are already prone to hair loss are especially at risk, as exposure to high temperatures can worsen the problem. He recommends taking lukewarm showers with water between 37–39°C. The temperature can be checked by touching the water to the inner wrist — if it feels burning, it’s too hot for the scalp. The doctor also advises limiting showers to about five minutes, which is enough to wash away sweat, dirt, and product residue before bed while minimizing scalp irritation. If showering after a morning workout, it’s better to use cooler water and avoid scrubbing the scalp too harshly.

It is worth noting that earlier, a study published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine found that consuming alcoholic beverages in any amount increases the risk of dementia.
