A nationwide “Sanitary, Epidemiological and Hygiene Month in Livestock Farming” has been declared in Uzbekistan from April 18 to May 18, the Ministry of Agriculture reported.
According to the ministry, the risk of the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (locally referred to as “oqsil” or “yashur”) among livestock is increasing in several foreign countries.
Data from the World Organisation for Animal Health indicate that new “SAT” strains of the disease were recorded in 48 countries in 2025–2026. Existing vaccines do not provide full protection against these strains, making the active involvement and responsibility of farmers and livestock breeders crucial in preventing its spread.
In this regard, farms are urged to strictly observe veterinary and sanitary regulations, set up disinfection points at entrances, restrict access for outsiders and vehicles, comply with animal hygiene standards, ensure proper feeding and clean water supply, maintain cleanliness, and control pests.
If infection is suspected, animals must be immediately isolated from others and kept in quarantine until a veterinarian arrives. The use of medication without professional guidance is strongly discouraged.
Farmers are advised to seek veterinary assistance immediately if animals show symptoms such as high fever, lesions in the mouth and on hooves, or damage to the udder. In such cases, premises should be disinfected, animal products should not be moved outside the area, and milk must not be consumed without boiling.
Timely vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure. Cattle should be vaccinated twice a year (in spring and autumn), while sheep should be vaccinated once a year. If necessary, all animals older than 2.5–3 months are subject to mandatory vaccination, with immunity developing within 15–21 days.
In case of any symptoms, farmers are encouraged to contact specialists via the following numbers: (71) 202-12-00 (extensions: 210, 218, 323).
“Dear farmers and livestock breeders, maintaining cleanliness and adhering to veterinary rules are key to protecting animal health. Cleanliness ensures higher productivity, healthy livestock, and stable income. We urge you to carry out all preventive and anti-epizootic measures in an organized manner during this campaign,” the statement said.
A set of recommendations (guidelines) on disease prevention has also been issued.
