The majority of the 61 trillion soums allocated for road construction and repair over the past seven years has been spent on international and republican roads. However, 75 to 80 percent of fatal traffic accidents also occur on these roads. This was stated on June 16 during a videoconference meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, which focused on the effectiveness of ongoing reforms, regional development, and addressing issues concerning the public.
It was noted that the public is highly dissatisfied with the quality of public transportation and increasing traffic congestion. Another major complaint concerns the placement of surveillance cameras on roads. These cameras currently function solely to record traffic violations and issue fines. It was emphasized that such systems should be used to manage traffic flow and reduce congestion and accidents.
The slow progress in redesigning intersections, updating road markings and signs, and converting traffic lights to smart control systems also came under criticism.
It was further noted that although a presentation was previously held in the capital on traffic regulation using artificial intelligence, no practical results have yet been achieved.
