A geologist has been detained for attempting to sell a secret geological map showing the location of gold deposits in Samarkand for $25,000, the State Security Service (SSS) reported.
According to the report, the director of a private company engaged in geological services in Samarkand gained the trust of a local resident with the intention of illicit enrichment. The man had previously held high-ranking positions in the Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology. He claimed to possess secret geological maps and photographs showing the locations of gold deposits identified through exploration activities in the Samarkand and Jizzakh regions. He offered to sell the materials for $25,000.
During an urgent operation carried out by officers of the Samarkand Regional Department of the SSS, the individual was caught in the act while receiving $10,000 of the agreed amount. Material evidence was seized at the scene.
However, according to the conclusion of the relevant authorities, none of the materials the man attempted to sell are classified as confidential.
In a separate incident, the operator of the Shahrisabz Gas Transmission Station (GTS), which operates under the “Muborak Main Gas Pipelines” department of the “Uztransgaz” joint-stock company, was caught soliciting a bribe. He demanded \$4,000 from a resident of Karshi, promising to help secure a job as a controller in one of Uztransgaz’s subsidiaries through high-level contacts.
The operator was detained during a special operation conducted jointly by the Kashkadarya Regional Department of the SSS and the Department of the Internal Revenue Service while receiving the bribe.
Criminal cases have been opened against both individuals, and investigations are ongoing.
It is worth noting that earlier in the Bukhara region, a chief accountant and his deputy were detained for attempting to embezzle budget funds through kickbacks.
