On April 21, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, who is on an official visit to the country, the presidential press service reported.
According to the report, the meeting focused on key issues related to further developing cooperation with the organization in modernizing and strengthening the national healthcare system.
It was noted that in recent years, cooperation with the World Health Organization has reached a qualitatively new level. Large-scale and systemic reforms in the healthcare sector are being implemented with the organization’s expert advisory support and in line with its international standards and recommendations.
Within the framework of cooperation, a number of strategic documents aimed at developing the healthcare system have been adopted. Qualified medical personnel are being trained, while primary healthcare, diagnostics, and disease prevention systems are being improved, and mechanisms for state medical insurance are being introduced.
The WHO Director-General highly praised the reforms being carried out in Uzbekistan, noting significant progress in expanding access to healthcare services, increasing life expectancy, reducing maternal mortality, and developing digital healthcare.
At the end of the meeting, agreements were reached to further enhance practical cooperation in priority areas, including improving the pharmaceutical regulatory system and introducing digital solutions and artificial intelligence technologies in the healthcare sector, as well as conducting joint events and research.
It is worth noting that earlier, Saida Mirziyoyeva held a meeting with Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on the sidelines of an international forum on combating drug threats in Samarkand.
