Entrepreneur Usmonjon Abdusamatov, who voiced criticism about corruption in the construction sector, will not face punishment for his remarks. This was reported by the Business Ombudsman.
According to the Ombudsman, control over the situation was taken after social media reports alleged that Abdusamatov was being pressured for his statements.
“Entrepreneurs will not be punished for their critical opinion. This case is assessed by the Business Ombudsman as harassment of the entrepreneur,” the statement said.
The Ombudsman emphasized that the free activity of entrepreneurs and protection of their rights are guaranteed by law, adding that resolving the problems faced by entrepreneurs is one of its priority tasks.
“It should be noted that the open expression of opinions and critical comments by entrepreneurs helps to improve government reforms and increase their effectiveness. If an entrepreneur expresses an opinion for the development of the sector, it should not lead to criticism or punishment. On the contrary, such views must be treated as an opportunity to solve problems,” the statement added.
It should be noted that on August 29, during an open dialogue with construction sector entrepreneurs at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Abdusamatov, who introduced himself as the head of several construction companies, claimed that the cost of a house in Tashkent can reach up to $200,000, while in the Tashkent region it is up to $100,000. He argued that it is nearly impossible to obtain project permits without “Assalamu alaikum” — implying bribes. He also called on authorities to address the issue of unjustified rejections of applications. Following his remarks, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Communal Services submitted an official request to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to take disciplinary measures against Abdusamatov and provide a legal assessment.
