Kazakhstan became a non-contributing member of the Gaza-focused “Peace Council,” with a nominal contribution of $1 billion, the press service of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev told journalists.
“Joining the Peace Council requires a state’s absolute sovereign decision. From the moment of accession, a country’s membership term in the Council is three years. The voluntary contribution of $1 billion stipulated in the Charter is not a condition for membership. It is a right granted to each participant. If such a contribution is made within the first year, the country may extend its membership beyond the initial three-year term. Kazakhstan joined the Peace Council without making any financial contribution, which fully complies with the provisions of the Charter,” the statement said.
On January 22, representatives of 19 countries signed the Charter of the Peace Council, established to promote peace in the Gaza Strip, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. According to US President Donald Trump, who initiated the Council, additional countries have also joined the organization.
The Peace Council was formed in line with an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas on the governance of the Gaza Strip. However, it is also expected to address the prevention and resolution of conflicts in other regions.
Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev also attended the Charter-signing ceremony and joined the Council. However, it remains unclear under what terms Uzbekistan became a member of the organization.
