Uzbek scientists have developed a self-degrading film, according to the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.
The researchers created an environmentally friendly film that fully decomposes in water and soil and could serve as an alternative to plastic bags. In appearance and durability, the new film resembles conventional polyethylene, but it is completely safe for the environment. The invention is expected to be used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
“These films are similar to synthetic polyethylene films in appearance and mechanical properties, but are completely safe for nature. They easily decompose in soil and water environments without harming the environment. Most importantly, these biofilms are promising for use in the food and pharmaceutical industries and could become an important step in reducing plastic waste,” the statement said.
Earlier, scientists in Japan reported developing plastic that fully dissolves in seawater within one hour.
