Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Culture and Information has developed a draft law aimed at restricting the use of social media by children and teenagers under the age of 16. The government’s press service reported this.

According to the information, the draft law has already been reviewed by experts and is currently open for public discussion. As part of its implementation, the authorities plan to introduce mechanisms for verifying the age of social media users and to impose fines for violations.

Special attention will also be paid to improving media literacy among the population and supporting independent media outlets.

For reference, in December last year, French President Emmanuel Macron also stated that children under the age of 15–16 should be barred from using social media in France. He said that a mandatory age verification system would be introduced across all social media platforms, and access would be restricted for children and adolescents who have not reached the established age threshold.
