Damir Yodgorov, who served as the first governor of Bukhara region from 1992 to 1994, passed away on July 4 at the age of 88 after a prolonged illness. The news was confirmed by the regional governent.
Born on February 18, 1937, in Shafirkan district, Yodgorov graduated from the Tashkent Agricultural Institute in 1960. He began his career as secretary of the Youth Committee at the institute and went on to hold several key positions in the Youth Organization as well as in the agricultural and water management sectors.
From 1992 to 1994, Yodgorov led the Bukhara region as its mayor during the early years of Uzbekistan's independence. During his tenure, significant progress was made in developing the region's agricultural sector, particularly in breeding and seed production.
As director of the Bukhara branch of the Uzbekistan Cotton Research Institute, Yodgorov contributed to the discovery of around 10 economically viable cotton varieties well-suited to the Zarafshan oasis, marking a major achievement in regional cotton farming.
In recognition of his dedication and contributions, he was honored with the title of "Honored Agricultural Worker of the Republic of Uzbekistan" and awarded the Order of "Mehnat shuhrati (Labor Glory)."
It is worth noting that while the official appointment of regional governors began in 1992 by presidential decree, many, including Damir Yodgorov, had effectively governed their regions prior to that as heads of the local Communist Party.
Earlier, it was also reported that Azim Latipov, Hero of Uzbekistan and member of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, passed away at the age of 74. Born on June 6, 1951, in Shafirkan district, Latipov began his career in 1971 as a livestock mechanic on a collective farm.
