Farmers in the Karakiya district of Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region have reported a mass die-off of livestock. According to local residents, the deaths were caused by heavy rainfall that turned the land into mud and swamp-like conditions. This was reported by Lada.kz.

According to reports, on April 20 this year, 237 animals died, including more than 100 horses, as well as over 100 sheep and goats. On April 21, another 316 animals died, most of them horses, with the remainder being sheep and goats. In total, more than 550 livestock died in the district over two days, nearly half of them horses.

“At present, in the Karakiya district, local executive authorities, together with industrial enterprises, are working to deploy special equipment due to soil erosion and waterlogging. Efforts are also underway to count the livestock and prepare the necessary documentation,” the local administration said in a statement.

It was reported that after official reports are completed and the animals are identified through microchips, the disposal of the dead livestock will begin in cooperation with veterinary services. The issue of compensation will be considered in accordance with current legislation.

Earlier, it was reported that heavy rainfall in Mangystau had also caused horse deaths.
