Scientists have discovered how stress negatively impacts sleep and memory. The study was published in the "Journal of Neuroscience".

The experiments were conducted on mice. When scientists activated CRH neurons, the animals exhibited symptoms typical of severe stress, such as impaired spatial memory and reduced sleep. In contrast, when the activity of these neurons was suppressed under stress conditions, the mice showed improved memory and experienced deeper, longer sleep.

The researchers paid particular attention to the connection between these neurons and the lateral hypothalamus, the brain region responsible for regulating wakefulness and sleep. It was revealed that stress-induced sleep and memory disturbances occur precisely through these neuronal pathways. Targeted intervention on these connections led to the restoration of cognitive function and improved sleep quality.

According to the authors, this work opens up new possibilities for treating stress-related conditions, ranging from insomnia to cognitive disorders. The next phase of the research will involve investigating whether these mechanisms are also present in humans.

Previously, experts from the Program for International Educational Achievement (PIE) reported that people are increasingly losing the ability to think logically and solve simple problems.
