Producing greenhouse crops in Surkhandarya costs two to three times less than in other regions, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said on February 27 during a meeting on the comprehensive development of the Surkhandarya region.

This year, based on the experience of Spain’s Almería region, solar-heated greenhouses will be established on 1,000 hectares. Entrepreneurs who build such greenhouses will be granted land on a rent-free basis for five years and will be exempt from payments for underground water use for three years.

Another major untapped opportunity in Surkhandarya is its pastureland.

For example, Boysun district has 197,000 hectares of pasture. By restoring pumps along the Darband River and supplying water, it would be possible to bring 10,000 hectares of pasture into use. Of this, 1,500 hectares could be allocated for potato cultivation, with the remaining land used for fodder crops.

It was emphasized that reserve pastureland will now be put up for auction with a starting price set at 1 percent of its normative value to encourage development.

Entrepreneurs who acquire land through auctions will be provided with 10-year loans at an interest rate of 14 percent, including a four-year grace period. Subsidies of up to 120 million soums will be allocated to supply water to every 10 hectares of land.

Under a three-year program, officials have been tasked with bringing 58,000 hectares of pastureland into circulation and establishing the breeding of 300,000 sheep and goats in these areas.
