Uzbekistan to host Olympic qualification tournament

According to the final decision of the Executive Committee of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), Uzbekistan will host an Olympic qualification tournament in 2027 for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The press service of the Uzbekistan Weightlifting Federation reported this.
Members of the IWF Executive Committee unanimously approved Uzbekistan’s candidacy. The prestigious qualification competitions are planned to take place in Tashkent, at the Olympic Village, which features modern infrastructure and fully meets international standards.
In addition to Uzbekistan, Qatar, Peru, Venezuela, and Thailand have also been granted the right to host Olympic qualification tournaments.
It is worth noting that only five Olympic qualification competitions will be held worldwide ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
For reference, Akbar Djuraev, a member of the Uzbekistan national weightlifting team, won a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games. Competing in the 102 kg weight category, Djuraev lifted 185 kg in the snatch and 219 kg in the clean and jerk, finishing second overall with a total of 404 kg.
