In the first nine months of this year, a total of 1,303 fatalities were recorded as a result of road traffic accidents in Uzbekistan. This was announced by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defense and Security Issues, Qutbiddin Burkhanov, during the 11th plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis on November 1.
According to him, legal frameworks have been created to improve the culture of compliance with traffic rules among drivers and pedestrians, enhance the system of driver training and retraining, and fully digitalize the organization of road traffic.
As a result, over the past nine months, the total number of traffic accidents in Uzbekistan has decreased by 3.8 percent — from 6,127 to 5,895. The number of injuries dropped by 3.5 percent — from 4,759 to 4,592, fatalities declined by 4.8 percent — from 1,368 to 1,303, and accidents involving pedestrians decreased by 5.8 percent — from 2,855 to 2,689.
For reference, in 2024, a total of 9,364 traffic accidents occurred in Uzbekistan, resulting in the deaths of 2,203 people and injuries to nearly 9,000 others.
It is worth noting that earlier, the United Nations reported that 1.2 million people die on the roads each year worldwide, while around 50 million suffer injuries. Road traffic accidents are ranked as the eighth leading cause of death globally.
