In Uzbekistan, instead of supporting entrepreneurs, some officials are themselves becoming obstacles to their progress. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev acknowledged this issue during a videoconference meeting held on April 18, which focused on measures to mitigate the impact of global economic shocks on the sectors and industries of Uzbekistan.
“I repeat and emphasize—those who claim that ‘the current situation in the world does not affect us’ are making a huge mistake. In these circumstances, we must take bold steps, relying solely on our own strength and internal resources,” the head of state said.
It was noted during the meeting that many officials still fail to grasp the seriousness of the current challenges and the urgency to double their efforts. The heads of ministries, sectors, and regions must prepare clear action plans and personally oversee production and export matters.
“Over the past week, officials have met with more than 3,000 experienced entrepreneurs. These entrepreneurs are raising new issues that need to be addressed quickly in order to adapt to fluctuations in international markets. There are numerous questions directed at ministers, governors, as well as leaders of banks and industries,” the Presidential Administration stated in its report on the meeting.
During the videoconference, President Mirziyoyev criticized some leaders for their failure to study market trends, assess risks accurately, and for hindering entrepreneurial activity rather than facilitating it.
He warned that strict measures would be taken against such officials.
