Courts have handed down prison sentences of eight to nine years to fraudsters operating illegally at the Sergeli car market in Tashkent’s Sergeli district. The Tashkent City Department of Internal Affairs reported this through its press service.
According to the department, a number of people engaged in illegal activities and unauthorized brokerage, locally known as “saygaklik,” were identified during an operational and preventive raid conducted by Tashkent police at the Sergeli car market. They were taken to the district police department, where documents were formalized and relevant measures were taken.
A total of 100 people were identified during the operation. Preventive conversations were held with 50 of them, while 30 others were sentenced by the Sergeli District Court to administrative detention and fines.
Authorities said nearly 10 criminal cases related to similar incidents were identified in 2025 and in the past period of 2026.
For example, in January 2026, a citizen identified as Tojiboyev was found to have deceived several people at the market for vehicles and spare parts in Sergeli district. He allegedly promised to sell them vehicles at low prices, obtained their property through fraud and abuse of trust, and spent the proceeds for his own needs.
The Sergeli District Criminal Court found Tojiboyev guilty under Article 168, Part 4, Clause “a” of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan, which covers fraud, and sentenced him to nine years in prison.
In addition, in January 2026, another citizen, Sherqobilov, was also found to have committed similar fraudulent acts at the car market.
The Sergeli District Criminal Court sentenced Sherqobilov to eight years in prison under Article 168, Part 4, Clause “a” of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan.
Earlier, a fraud case involving promises to secure university admission and employment was uncovered in Tashkent’s Yakkasaray district.
