Lawyer caught taking bribe in Syrdarya

A lawyer in Syrdarya demanded $5,500 from a suspect in exchange for ensuring a favorable outcome in a criminal case, the State Security Service reported.

According to the report, a lawyer from the Syrdarya District Bar Association, using his official position, demanded $5,500 from a suspect involved in a criminal case under investigation by the district’s Investigation Department. He allegedly promised to have the suspect, currently held at Detention Center No. 8 in Khavas District, transferred to the temporary detention facility of the Syrdarya District Department of Internal Affairs and later to secure a positive court ruling in his favor.

During an operational event, the lawyer was caught red-handed while receiving $4,500 and 6 million soums, which were seized as material evidence.

It is noted that the lawyer had been appointed by the state to provide legal assistance to the suspect as part of public defense.

A criminal case has been initiated against him under Article 168 (Fraud), part 3, paragraph ’’v,’’ and Articles 28 and 211 (Bribery), Part 1, of the Criminal Code. Investigative actions are currently underway.

It is worth noting that earlier, officials and lawyers in Navoi, Surkhandarya regions, and Tashkent city were also detained for soliciting bribes.
