The Football Association of Uzbekistan (UFA) has made an official offer to Italian coach Fabio Cannavaro to become the head coach of the Uzbekistan national football team. This was reported by well-known football insider Fabrizio Romano on his page on the X social network.
“The Football Association of Uzbekistan has made official contact with Fabio Cannavaro. Negotiations with the Italian coach, a former Ballon d'Or winner, are ongoing,” Romano wrote.
After retiring from his playing career, Cannavaro coached clubs in the Middle East and China. In 2019, he was appointed head coach of the Chinese national team. From 2022 to 2023, he managed the Italian club Benevento. In April 2024, he took charge of Udinese and worked there for a period before moving to Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb. He is currently without a club.
Earlier, citing sources close to Cannavaro, Sport-Express reported that the Italian specialist had rejected an offer from UFA. According to those sources, Cannavaro hopes to secure a position at a Serie A club if one of the current coaches is dismissed.
It is worth noting that UFA has been searching for a new head coach for the national team for some time. Before Cannavaro, names such as Paulo Bento, Fatih Terim, and Joachim Löw were also considered. However, both Löw and Bento turned down offers to manage Uzbekistan’s national team.
Timur Kapadze, who currently heads the national team, confirmed at a press conference before the CAFA Nations Cup 2025 that he would like to see an experienced specialist with World Cup experience lead the team.
