Uzbekistan will assume the chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement for the 2027–2029 period. The announcement was made on January 15 during a video conference meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the activities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Uzbekistan’s diplomatic missions abroad.
It was noted that the meeting focused on expanding bilateral and multilateral political and diplomatic ties, as well as enhancing the international standing of New Uzbekistan.
In addition to chairing the Non-Aligned Movement in 2027–2029, Uzbekistan is also being nominated for non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council for the 2035–2036 term.
All diplomats were instructed to maintain a high level of activity on the international agenda this year and to make sustained efforts to ensure that Uzbekistan’s foreign policy agenda remains substantive and proactive.
The president stressed that preparations for high-level foreign visits must begin well in advance, rather than just one month before such trips. Poorly prepared agreements, he warned, could later turn into unviable projects or leave investors facing prolonged uncertainty.
Concern was expressed that high-level visits have not yet been conducted with several major countries that possess significant global influence, including the United Kingdom, Spain, Indonesia, Australia, Brazil, and Canada. The president also criticized the lack of concrete proposals to revitalize cooperation with countries where relations remain sluggish.
Tasks were set to improve the quality of preparations for high-level foreign visits and to strengthen the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ capacity for strategic analysis and planning.
For reference, the Non-Aligned Movement is an international organization uniting countries that seek to remain outside major military and political blocs and pursue independent foreign policies. Uzbekistan joined the organization in 1992. Uganda currently holds the chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement.
